You might not know this but Granny is a big David Beckham fan. Granny was very excited because she had got tickets to go and watch the England football team play in a very important match. It was the World Cup Final and England hadn’t won it for a very long time. As soon as they got there, Granny pushed her way to the front. She wanted to make sure that she would get the very best view of the players, especially David Beckham. The referee blew his whistle and everybody started to cheer but suddenly somebody from the other team scored a goal… and then another one! Things were not looking good. The whistle went for half time, the players went off the pitch, and everybody started complaining about how rubbish England were playing today. After a while the teams came back onto the pitch. Everybody pretended they thought England could win the match and it worked – England scored a goal straight away…and then a few minutes later they scored again!

The score was two all when suddenly something dreadful happened. David Beckham had the ball and was running towards the goal when a player from the other team fouled him! Granny was really cross. Before anybody could do anything, she had jumped over the fence and was hitting the other player over the head with her handbag. Nobody could believe their eyes! The referee ordered a penalty. While the England team were busy deciding who should take the penalty, Granny booted the ball towards the goal as hard as she could. Everybody held their breath. Nobody dared look as the ball soared through the air and headed towards the goal. The goalkeeper wasn’t sure which way to go, he dived for the ball but he went the wrong way! The ball was in the back of the net! Granny had just scored a goal for England. Not only that, the final whistle went and England had won the World Cup! Everybody was so happy that they sang and danced all the way home.
